Cherished by many for his tenderness, fortitude, hope and tenacity, he was an award-winning novelist, admired poet and vital presence on the Irish literary scene for over four decades. Philip battled repeated health challenges, stood up for causes he believed in, and relished making mischief. first of which won the inaugural Listowel Writers’ Week Novel of the Year Award
in 1995. Colm Tóibín called it “a stunningly truthful and perfectly pitched
novel.” Philip also published The Coupla, a novel for children based on
Irish folklore, prompted by a request from his niece, Iseult. Alongside a selection of Philip's work, the anthology also includes a detailed bibliography of his published work and unpublished prose. A pioneer in

Strokestown International Award in 2001 and has been the recipient of two Arts

College Dublin, most recently he was a writer in residence at the International
Writing Program at the University
of Iowa. Maiden Names was described by the poet Bernard
O’Donoghue: ‘Martin Dyar’s narratives about the strangeness of the everyday
have a vividness and colour which are a thrilling new development in Irish
poetry. Their eloquence and life clear the boards of anything tired or
familiar, making room for the language of poetry to move into new areas to cope
with the central moments of people’s lives. This is a book of real importance
and originality.’

Listowel Writers’ Week is delighted to announce the five finalists for our inaugural Pigott Poetry Prize 2014.
The €5,000 award is for books of poetry written by Irish writers and
has been generously supported by industrialist and philantrophist Mr
Mark Pigott KBE, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PACCAR Inc.

An astonishing 80 collections were submitted for the Award and
confirms that poetry is not only alive and kicking on our small island,
but positively thriving. Journalist and critic John Boland and UK Poet
Laureate Carol Ann Duffy had the mammoth task of choosing the shortlist.

Speaking about the shortlist, John Boland said, “It was very
difficult to choose among almost 80 submitted books, many of them very
fine and some exceptional, but I think our shortlist reflects the range,
diversity and quality of contemporary Irish Poetry.”

UK Poet Laureate
Carol Ann Duffy added that she”was particularly impressed by the
stunning new work reflected in the shortlist, all of whom would be a
worthy winner. I hope this marvellous new award goes from strength to
strength.”

On the shortlist’s announcement, Mark Pigott, whose family originated
in Listowel and emigrated to the United States in the late 1890s said,
“We are delighted with the tremendous response to the Pigott Poetry
Prize. The shortlisted books of poetry reflect our wonderful heritage as
well as the infinite variety of Irish writing.”
The book addresses various states of in-betweenness as the poet transitions through life, from single woman through to wife and mother. Echoing its title, there is a sense of the animal and the divine as some of the poems grapple with the corporeality of pregnancy and motherhood, and the illumination that maternal love brings. Wit flows through the volume, infusing humour amid the poet’s reflections on her new circumstances.
